Finally, we reach the present-day with Doom 3, which was released only a few
weeks ago. Of the four screenshots I have shown you, this is the only
one that I did not acquire myself, but is one of the
promotional images that have been circulating about the game.
We can see at the back here that we have what appears to be a soda
vending machine
with a blurry texture. Amazingly enough, the problem of texture magnification
is plaguing even the newest games!
First-person shooters are particularly
prone to these problems because almost all the surfaces in the game world need to be textured
and the player can typically walk up to any surface and zoom in to the
texture. Because the game
developers cannot afford to store every texture at high resolution, they
must make concessions and must let some textures appear blurry at
run-time.
